YEAR 7 ANCIENT HISTORY TOUR (approx 1.15 hours)

The Golden Dragon Museum is uniquely placed to offer Year 7 Ancient history students a chance to see their subject brought to life. We are the largest museum of Chinese history and culture in Australia and we have designed a special tour for Year 7 Ancient Chinese History students.

Our museum contains some incredible artefacts from as far back as the Shang Dynasty (1500-1000BC). We have a collection of currency which contains money from every imperial dynasty from Qin to Qing.

Our tour guides have a great understanding of Chinese rituals, religions and society. We tell students the uses for artefacts in the museum to paint students a picture of what life was like in a very different time and place.

We also offer great insights into the ancient history of China by drawing comparisons between that history and local stories and history the students already know.

YEAR 9 IMMIGRATION HISTORY TOUR (approx 1.15 hours)

The Golden Dragon Museum is the largest museum of Chinese history and culture in Australia. A lot of the artefacts and displays relate to the history and experience of Chinese in Bendigo in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Our specially designed tour covers all the important aspects of Chinese life here in Australia and the circumstances that caused those people to travel such distances for a new life. The history of the Bendigo Chinese is a microcosm for the history of Chinese all around Australia.

REVOLUTIONS VCE PROGRAM (approx 1.5 hours)

Here at the Golden Dragon Museum we can offer VCE Revolution students with an excellent introduction or refresher to the study of VCE History Revolutions: China. We are the largest museum of Chinese history and culture in Australia and we have designed a special tour for VCE History Revolution students.

In the museum there are many interesting Qing dynasty artefacts that all originated from imperial palaces and noble’s estates. These lavish, valuable items highlight the decadence and detachment of the old regime and only made it to Australia as a result of the Cultural Revolution.

Sometime before 1892 the Chinese community in Bendigo petitioned Emperor Guangxu for an Imperial dragon, which was sent out here and is on display. From that moment forward, the history of the Bendigo Chinese was linked with the fall of the Qing dynasty and the formation of the republic.

We have a life-size wax figurine of Dr Sun YatSen, founder of modern China, students will see this and hear about this man’s lifelong efforts to bring his country into the modern era.

There are many, many other great pieces of history and culture to see, which all serve to broaden VCE student’s understanding of their course. We received this thank you from one of our tours,

‘Hi, James Larking from Daylesford Secondary college here. I would just like to thank your staff and museum for a great tour last Wednesday. My students found the tour interesting, engaging and helpful for their understanding of the course. I wish you success in your future promotion of this service and hope to see you again. Thanks, James Larking’
